Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico Coordinates
Isla de Vieques is one of the jewels of the Spanish Virgin Islands, six miles off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico. For most of the twentieth century, the majority of the island was a US Naval bombing range. And while this is a sad part of the history of the island with lingering health effects for the locals, it also kept the island undeveloped, like the Caribbean of old. Today, a majority of the island is part of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge and no resorts, golf courses, or casinos mar the raw natural beauty.
Vieques has a diverse landscape, with everything from mangrove lined bays to hills rising to nearly one thousand feet. The tropical warmth is present year round, but trade winds cool the island, keeping it comfortable. Beautiful, isolated beaches, including the stunning black sand beach, Playa Negrita, surround Vieques. Wild horses roam, and the reefs just offshore provide stellar snorkeling and scuba diving. But the biggest draw on Vieques is the bioluminescent bay, which is the brightest in the world.
Isabel Segunda is the larger of the two towns on the island. Located on the north side, it receives the ferry from mainland Puerto Rico. But most sailors coming into Vieques transit along the south shore, anchoring up in the remote Ensenada Honda before making their way downwind to Esperanza. The wild and undeveloped island and the welcoming locals make Vieques a captivating destination, sure to leave you with fond memories and a strong desire to return.
