Jost Van Dyke Coordinates
Jost Van Dyke only encompasses three square miles. But the island is packed with fun. The beach bars – the world famous Foxy’s Tamarind Bar and Soggy Dollar, to name just the most famous – and their live music are a big part of the draw. However, the natural beauty of the island and the incredible people who make Jost Van Dyke home are what really keep visitors coming back.
Opened in the late 1960s, Foxy’s bar is a Jost institution. Tucked into the corner of Great Harbour, Foxy’s is always a necessary stop, especially when Foxy himself is playing the guitar and acting as the raconteur. Of course, Foxy’s is also the place to be on Old Year’s Night, where thousands of revelers see in the New Year.
For it’s part, Soggy Dollar Bar, just over the hill in White Bay, has its own storied history. The birthplace of the legendary painkiller – a fruity rum cocktail with Pusser’s at its heart – Soggy Dollar is, as they say, a sunny spot for shady people. Be sure to grab a painkiller, play some hook, and enjoy a tipsy day at the perfect beach.
As we have said, Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar might be what initially attracts you to Jost Van Dyke. But it is the people and the natural beauty that will have you making plans for a return trip and picking up one of our Just Van Dyke t-shirts to remember the amazing little island. Take a trip around the north side of the island, taking in the rugged cliffs and dry forest with the rough North Atlantic beyond. And be sure to spend some time in the Bubbly Pool, a natural rock grotto that turns into a jacuzzi with any kind of swell.
South-facing White Bay, with its brilliant white sand and the beautiful color of the reef-filled water, is the premier beach on the island and, arguably, throughout the entire British Virgin Islands. The natural beauty certainly extends below the water as well, with great snorkeling around Green Cay and Sandy Spit, turtles galore at Diamond Cay off Foxy’s Taboo, and numerous schools of tropical fish on the rocky side of White Bay.
But the best part of any stop at Jost Van Dyke is spending time with the people who make the island home. Get to know Foxy, Joan at Sugar and Spice Bakery, Sidney from Peace and Love, and all the other great characters and kind people across the island.
